Semarang / December, 2019

Here's to sum up my new year trip to Semarang aka #pulangkampung featuring Eka Jasmine.
We decided to explore hidden gem at the heart of Semarang. Thanks to her for adding my list-to-go and let's travel more! Anyway, I am proud to say that Semarang received the CLEANEST Tourist Destination in Southeast Asia, read here:

Curious what all went down with the list?

1. Makuta Cafe - The Finest Jamu
I finally found the underrated JAMU at the quaint little shop around the midst of Kranggan (China Town in Semarang). It owned by Nyonya Meneer family, one of the famous Jamu producers in Indonesia. The ambiance is soooooo good. You can smell those mix spices boiled once you entered the room. You will experience Jamu in a more "cafe" way with any kind of flavors and benefits to your body and MIND! "Ibu" will be there to answer anything and guide your picks. We spent about 2 hours talking as she served the other guests. Luckily, we got the best spot in the cafe that will be my favorite corner whenever I come again.

Recommendations:
1. Makuta Rama ready-to-drink Daun Sereh. My only drinks in daily basis are mineral water and tea (sometimes) but I will say this is the best-flavored drink 've ever tasted that I want to consume every day. Very light, aromatic Sereh and gives a cool sensation when it go through your chest (SERIOUSLY). Make sure you consume it cold.
2. Beras Kencur Ice Cream. Quite strange at first but the taste is the opposite. You can't nearly taste the Jamu but you can feel the spices-scented filled your mouth. Each spoon has a mild flavor of beras kencur which made from Galanga (Kencur), Ginger, Turmeric, Cinnamon and Brown Sugar. Anyone of you who come to Makuta, this ice cream is a must.
3. GULA ASAM. This is the third pick by Ibu for us. She said we can drink it directly but I preferably make it as syrup because the texture is thick. It's actually made by 100% Gula Jawa. The best time to drink is when you longing for warmth in the cold misty morning #eaaaa
4. JAMPI USUS. This is my very least pick on the menu but to give your tongue a new experience, this is the right cup they can offer. All in all, the menu will provide the best jamu for any symptoms. They provide medication through the ingredients that (obviously) made from natural spices like ginger, curcuma, hyacinth, etc. So we decided to try "Jampi Usus" spiced by turmeric and cinnamon. "Ibu" will boiled the spices all together and served it with melted sugar and jelly to treat the bitter. As you can see the name, this subtle spicy mouthfeel will induce your digestion right away.

2. Pecinan Night Market

Before we had a stop in Makuta, we were strolling around Pecinan Night Market and having a coffee milk at little coffee shop Waroeng Kopi Alam. It may be hard to found this waroeng at night because most of the travellers are focus on searching street food. I think they are the only coffee shop along the street.
Basically the ambiance is very similar to Petaling and Alor street, Kuala Lumpur. There are plenty of stalls you can try from crispy chicken, grilled squid, to Pisang Plenet. Three words: worth to try! It quite hard to find empty tables around the street after 8pm and don’t forget to keep your belonging when the crowd at the peakest. Pecinan opens at 5 – 12pm.

Thanks n Ciao!
